Year 8 Informal Concert

This was the last Informal Concert at Elstree for this year group and the array of instruments presented was truly dazzling:  nine boys played seven different instruments including ones not often heard at Prep School level -the oboe, euphonium, and double bass.  Several of the boys who have completed their exams have been finding they now have extra time to practise and it was delightful to hear them.  Harry reminded us once more of why he was awarded his music scholarship to Marlborough with his dynamic trumpet playing, Sam transported us to an English village green with his unaccompanied violin solo, ‘Morpeth Rant’, and Joe and Charlie took the opportunity to give their exam pieces an airing.  It was a pleasure to hear both the rich sounds of River’s new cello in the famous Slavonic dance by Dvorak, and Tiger’s mellow double – bass solo. J ago made his debut on the piano playing  both musically and from memory, and Ryne who has been a stalwart of the Informal Concert series over the years gave an expressive rendition of ‘Over the Rainbow’ on his violin.  Peter rounded off the concert with the wonderful sounding euphonium- an instrument I have not heard since arriving seven and a half years ago, and we left the Long Room with a cheerful spring in our step after this relaxing half  hour’s entertainments from our Year 8 musicians – well done to them all.
