Year 7 Virtual Social with Downe House

The Lent Term Year 7 Big Weekend and social with Downe House is always eagerly anticipated, and while lockdown restrictions meant we were not able to meet in person, it was great to be able to take part in a virtual event with another school on Saturday night.

Big Weekends

Every term there are Big Boarding Weekends for Years 6 to 8 when all the children in that year group can experience boarding whether they are a current boarder or not.  There is an event on Saturday evening followed by an acitivty on Sunday morning such as Zorb sports or laser tag.  Each weekend has a different theme, from Ready, Steady, Cook to Bushcraft skills and social events with other schools.

This event was kindly hosted by Downe House.   The children were put into small groups and sent Teams meeting invitations along with a recipe for chocolate cookies.  At 7.15pm on Saturday night everyone logged on and introduced themselves, before busily getting started mixing and kneading their cookie dough.  Everyone is, of course, well-used to being on-line now and the children quickly fell into easy conversation. Although the baking only took 45 minutes, I am told some of the calls went on until almost 9pm as the children got to know each other and swapped stories of school and their lockdown experiences.

The children all enjoyed themselves enormously and relished the opportunity to chat and form new friendships – something they have not had many opportunities to do over the last year or so.

Head of Boarding, Mr Hepburn said “We are extremely grateful to Downe House for all their hard work in putting the evening together. While I cannot vouch for the quality of the cooking, I know all the Elstree children had a blast!”
