Year 7 Informal Concert

After a busy exam week it was sheer delight to head to the sun-filled Long Room to hear a select group of Year 7s perform. Well done to them for finding the time not only to sit their assessments but to play and sing – they have definitely got their work/ life balance sorted!

Nicky kicked off proceedings with the jaunty and familiar Pirates of the Caribbean medley on the flute, an instrument well-suited to the resonant acoustic of the venue. The perennial favourite, ‘Cockles and Mussels’ came next, with Hamish’s beautiful voice ringing out clearly. It is such a rare treat to hear the treble recorder played at a high level and Oliver’s Handel Sonata reminded us of earlier times before electronic devices, when playing chamber music was a favorite pastime! Koichi had everyone’s feet tapping as he played the kit along to `Dancing in the moonlight’.

For one moment I thought I was in a hay barn as Hamish  began his Ceilidh on the violin, with its evocative opening double stops, and we were then transported back to the Baroque era once again with Nicky’s  fast-moving Telemann piano sonata movement,

Well done to all performers and their supportive audience.
