Year 5 Visit To The Jewish Museum

On Thursday 22nd February, Year 5 visited the Jewish Museum in London for a day of culture, learning and history. We started by looking at some traditional prayer objects, such as the Torah, tallit, kippah, tefillin, rimonin and mezuzah (mistaken for Medusa by one boy).

In the afternoon we looked at the story of the persecution of the Jews in the 1930s, Kristallnacht (Night of the Broken Glass), and the Kinder transport. It was a fascinating time, which culminated in looking at a spice box that was left behind in Berlin by a Jewish lady who was taken to a death camp. The spice box was given to her son when he came to visit decades later and sums up the spirit of survival of culture, Jewish tradition and being part of that family. The boys were mesmerised by the account and so treasured the chance to hold it and reflect on its value. Great day all round.
