Year 5 & 6 Enrichment Programme

The vast majority of senior schools now conduct pretesting in the Autumn of Year 6 with interviews and assessment days following later in the year.  A new initiative was started at Elstree at the beginning of this academic year to not only equip the children with skills for this assessment process, but also to broaden their wider skill set to develop strength of character as they grow and learn.

To this end, Years 5 and 6 pupils have been fortunate to benefit from a range of lectures and workshops during their enrichment sessions on Saturday mornings. Lectures have included a UK executive of Microsoft, Mrs Nicola Hodson, talking future tech, an Apache helicopter pilot, Major Russell Archer, revealing how he had won the Military Cross, and a Cambridge historian, Niall Murphy (Senior Master at Radley) discussing the Spanish region of Catalonia and more recently, ‘Conspiracy Theories‘ as part of the school’s virtual enrichment programme.  More recently all children have had also had access to enrichment lectures such as  ‘What Makes Greatness’ from Mr Matthew Oakman, Deputy Head (Academic) at Wellington College.

Alongside the lectures and team building, pupils are taught BOFA, pre-testing and given interview rehearsals. Gavin Turner, Bradfield’s Director of Teaching and Learning, presented to the pupils on revision techniques and how best to prepare for examinations. We have been fortunate enough to have senior staff from Wellington, Eton, Radley and Winchester speak to the pupils about life at senior schools and what they can expect at interview.

It has been a delight to see this enrichment programme flourish so quickly and during the current crisis, with the school moving to a virtual platform, preparation with BOFA and interview practice with Mrs Inglis has continued via zoom.
