Year 3 Trip to the Hawk Conservancy

The Year 3 children had an amazing trip to the Hawk Conservancy last week. They were all enthralled by the breath taking bird displays and they learnt a huge amount about the very important conservation work that the Hawk Conservancy do. The rain did very little to dampen the spirits and enthusiasm of the children and they loved seeing such a variety of different, beautiful birds.

There was much chat on the coach, as we travelled back to Elstree, about which was the most awesome bird they had seen. Was it the Secretary bird, the bald eagle, the peregrine falcon, the vulture or one of the many species of owl? There were so many to choose from that they all agreed every bird was incredible for different reasons.

Many of the children have said that they would very much like to visit the Hawk Conservancy again with their families in the holidays, which just goes to show how much they enjoyed their day.

What did the children say about the trip?

In “The Valley of the Eagles” display, the eagles’ faces went pink because they were excited to see us! That’s what the presenter told us.  (Iris)

The rain made the trip more special. It made me feel happy.  (Timi)

When we saw the eagles coming, people started screaming. One of the eagles’ wings skimmed my head! (Megan)

My favourite show was “The Wings of Africa” which demonstrated the flying techniques of different birds. My favourite bird was the Secretary bird which tried to stamp on a pretend snake. (Luca)

Sling shots were used to fire food into the air. We then watched as the circling red kites fought over the food. (Akinniran)

If you turn your head to the side, one of the vultures, the disabled one, will copy you and this means she’s saying hello! (Iris)
