Welcoming two new members of staff to Elstree

Not being a ‘normal’ Lent Term, most people haven’t yet had the opportunity to meet two very important staff additions to Elstree.

Both have been thrown in the deep end, starting their new roles at our school during lockdown three.  However, with the positive news our Prime Minister delivered earlier this week, it shouldn’t be too long before we get to meet them (hurrah!).

Our new members of staff

First, we would like to welcome Ms Lorna Little, who is PA to Headmaster Mr Inglis. Then, let us introduce Mrs Julia Burnett, our new Head of Finance.

Here we find out a little more about them, as they fill us in on life before Elstree, the appeal of the role, first impressions and joining school during a lockdown.

PA to the Headmaster – Ms Lorna Little

Life before Elstree

“For the last 13 years, I have been PA to the Directors at The Nike Group of Companies, based at the Head Office in Bracknell.  Being part of a group of companies, it was great fun, especially being able to skate or ski at lunchtime!”

What attracted you to the role?

“I specifically searched for jobs within schools, as although it’s very different from working in a corporate environment, it’s something I have longed to do since helping in the school when my children were younger.  As soon as I saw the Elstree website, I very much wanted to work here.  I loved the nurturing and caring feel to it and was incredibly impressed with the teaching and school facilities.”

What are your initial impressions of Elstree?

“I was lucky to visit Elstree when the pupils were here before Christmas and I instantly loved the vibrancy and family feel within the school.  The staff members are all incredibly friendly and helpful. I couldn’t have asked for a better start, even with the current restrictions.”

How has it been starting a new role for a new employer during lockdown?

“Starting during lockdown has actually been good in some respects, as it has given me a chance to settle in.  That said, I am very much looking forward to the hustle and bustle once the pupils return and getting a glimpse of a more normal Elstree life.”

Head of Finance – Mrs Julia Burnett

Life before Elstree

“After qualifying as a chartered accountant in 2011, I joined the Boston Consulting Group in London.  I remained there for over 9 years. For the last three years, I was Head of Accounting & Tax,  heading up the Financial accounting, Accounts Payable, Tax and Payroll Teams. BCG was an incredible place to work and grow. I will be taking lots of experience and best practice with me to Elstree.”

What attracted you to the role?

“My husband and I have 2 daughters – 5 and 7 years old – who have joined the Pre-Prep at Elstree, so this has very much been a family-centred move. We were all really impressed by the warmth and family values of Elstree, which fits with our own family ethos. There is also the added benefit of a reduced commute, as Elstree is only 20 mins from our home.”

What are your initial impressions of Elstree?

“Everyone has been so welcoming and friendly and have been generous with their time. After such a long period working from home, going in to work physically has also been a breath of fresh air – you really can’t beat interactions with humans.  I am very much looking forward to children returning to the school again to really experience the vibrance and soul of the school.”

How has it been starting a new role for a new employer during lockdown?

“Leaving a company after over 9 years is daunting anyway, but layer on a Global pandemic and it really is unchartered territory. A big positive from this period has been the acceleration to the way we all use Technology and the hybrid approach to meetings and communications.”
