U10 British Youth Fencing Championship

On Saturday, 19th May 7 fencers from Elstree made their way up to Telford for the U10 British Youth Championships.  This is the largest competition of the year with nearly 90 fencers from all over the UK coming to Wrekin College to compete.

On arrival, the boys enjoyed a swim in the hotel pool and then supper before settling down for the evening ready for the big tournament.  The boys had a slightly slow start to the morning, but soon settled into their stride. It was great to see our fencers fighting well, against mostly older and more experienced fencers, but also to see the good sportsmanship and determination.

Following the first 2 rounds, the knock out stage then commenced based on previous results. Unfortunately because some of the early matches were lost, the boys fenced against higher ranked opponents, with only Alex progressing to the last 32 when he defeated the 22 seed.

Five of our fencers will return again to compete in the same event next year; more experienced, bigger, fitter and stronger.

The boys were a real credit to the school and must be congratulated for their efforts this season.
