SS Great Britain

As part of our History topic in the Lent term learning about the Victorian period, Year 4 visited the SS Great Britain in Bristol.  The ship was designed by the renowned Victorian engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel.  The boys enjoyed a ‘Victorians at Sea’ workshop which gave them an insight as to what it would have been like for a Victorian on board ship during a voyage to the US or Australia.

A very informative tour of the ship followed detailing different aspects of life for First Class and steerage passengers.  The recently opened museum allowed the boys to look at Brunel’s original drawings and letters.  On the way back to school we went via the Clifton Suspension Bridge, another of Brunel’s well known designs.
