Parents and Sons’ Golf Tournament

The rather overcast weather did nothing to dampen the spirits of the golfers that entered our annual Parents and Sons’ golf competition on Sunday, May 14th 2017.  The Elstree 9 hole golf course offers challenges that even Justin Rose might find difficulty in overcoming.  Benches, scoreboards, pavilions, cricket covers and even a shot put net provided some testing shots for the assembled field of 28 intrepid golfers.  The grounds staff had done a wonderful job in preparing the greens, though it was a tough choice to decide whether to hit putts hard and straight or play for the subtle borrows.
Some of the assembled field had clearly been practising, as the standard of golf was higher than ever.  The short game sessions with our visiting pro, Simon McGreal, have definitely raised the standard of the boys’ golf and they often left their more senior players in admiration of their skill and technique.  The 7th hole saw the ‘Longest Drive’ competition.  Benedict ripped one down the middle to claim the boys’ prize, whilst Mr Murray won the adults’ version.  ‘Nearest the Pin’ was at the picturesque short 9th.  Mr Williams won the adults’ prize, but even his effort was out shone by Hamish who hit his tee shot to a fantastic 10 feet from the hole with his first shot of the match!
When the final scores were in and handicaps considered, the Runners-up were Iain and Hamish and this year’s winners were Benedict partnered with his brother George. Well done to them and to all the competitors for playing so well and making it such an enjoyable afternoon.
