Parents and Children’s Golf Tournament

The rather overcast weather did nothing to dampen the spirits of the golfers that entered our annual Parents and Children’s golf competition on Sunday June 20thth 2021.

Elstree Golf Course

The Elstree 9 hole golf course offers challenges that even Rory McIlroy might have difficulty in overcoming.  Benches, scoreboards, pavilions, cricket covers and even a shot put net provided some testing shots for the assembled field of 20 intrepid golfers. The grounds staff had done a wonderful job in preparing the greens, though it was a tough choice to decide whether to hit putts hard and straight or play for the subtle borrows.

Impressive standard of golf

Some of the assembled field had clearly been practising as the standard of golf was very impressive. The short game sessions with our visiting pro, Barry Newman, have definitely raised the standard of the pupils’ golf and they often left their more senior players in admiration of their skill and technique.  The 7th hole saw the ‘Longest Drive’ competition. Benedict ripped one down the middle to claim the children’s prize, whilst Mark won the adults’ version.  ‘Nearest the Pin’ was at the picturesque short 9th. Christopher won the adults’ prize, but even his effort was out shone by Harry who hit an incredible tee shot to claim the children’s prize.

Final scores

When the final scores were in and handicaps considered, the Runners-up were Andy and Benedict and this year’s winners were Samuel partnered with his brother Torren. Well done to them and to all the competitors for playing so well and making it such an enjoyable afternoon.
