The Pangbourne College Piano Festival
Most student pianists can only dream of playing on a Steinway grand piano (it’s a little like being handed the keys to a McLaren F1), but for four Elstree boys that dream was realised this weekend at the Pangbourne College Piano Festival. Benedict, Peter, Joseph and Rupert all gave performances worthy of such beautiful instruments, making the very most of the exquisite tone and breadth of these world-class pianos.
Benedict won the Solo Advanced, 14 and under (Grades 7-8), class with his moving performance of Shui Cao Wu. Mrs Alex Garnier, Coordinator of the Piano Festival, said, ‘It is wonderful that in Benedict’s final year at Elstree he has won his class. He has been to every Festival, I think, since the Festival was created in 2013 and for me it has been a treat to hear his piano playing progress.’
In addition, Peter was described as ‘Outstanding’ by adjudicator Luis Parés, who also awarded Joseph with ‘Highly Commended’. Rupert’s performance was awarded a ‘Highly Commended’ by Pamela Chilvers.
Competition has become increasingly fierce at this friendly but prestigious Festival since its launch, and all four boys rose to the occasion with superb playing and confident stage presence. Well done to them all!
