Old Boys v Ludgrove Football

The annual Elstree v Ludgrove Old Boys’ Football Match kicked off in glorious sunshine on Sunday. The disappointment of the Rugby world Cup was thrown aside as the two teams did battle showing spirit and determination sadly lacking the previous evening. An even first half saw action at both ends but chances were few and far between. Ludgrove did manage to spring the offside trap just before the interval and so went one up.  However, a scramble in the Ludgrove defence, from a corner, enabled Alex Fryer to stab home the equaliser as the whistle sounded.

The game plan was altered during the break and a more fluid Elstree was apparent afterwards. A penalty was coolly converted by skipper Alex Fryer and a close range third was finished by Harry Benyon. Things looked easier but Ludgrove didn’t give up and they scored their second goal after a great save by James Fryer. Christian von Celsing attempted what would have been the best goal ever scored with an overhead strike that scorched past the far post.

The next attack did see the ball nestling in the back of the net as the skipper completed his hat-trick. The final goal was either an OG or an unstoppable power drive depending on whether you ask Rob Capron or the defender it cannoned off. The final score of 5-2 was about right as the Old Boys played some great stuff on a tricky pitch.
