National U13 IAPS Sixes – Southern Heats at Elstree

On Saturday, twenty teams took part in the Southern Heats of the IAPS Sixes which were held at Elstree. A damp morning brightened up as the tournament started and the improving weather was mirrored by some bright and occasionally dazzling football played by the Elstree team. Four group matches were taken in their stride with comprehensive victories over Pilgrims’, Crosfields, Winchester House and Edgeborough. Playing Sixes is an art form in itself and the boys played with great vision and passion. They mixed their palates well; short sharp passes creating the space for shots on goal, but most importantly they kept possession of the ball.

A quarter final win, 2 – 1 against York House saw the team line up against Hall Grove in the semi-finals; a match of real drama ensued. All square at full time meant two periods of extra effort and determination. Still there was nothing between the sides. A penalty shoot-out was required. Hall Grove hit the post with their first go; advantage Elstree. The five penalties that Elstree struck were unstoppable and so they marched on to the heats final. Tired of limb and emotionally drained, the final was less competitive and Cheam were worthy winners. There is, however, a chance to renew this rivalry at Chigwell where the National Finals will be staged on Sunday 16th November.

Well done boys; you played some excellent football and made everyone very proud.
