Maths Quiz Club Area Championship.

Several Quiz Club trophies adorn the front hall mantelpiece and it seemed a good time to reintroduce ourselves to the competition (which has now expanded) especially as we are previous winners.  As a result, during the first week of the summer term, 8 mathematicians hurtled down the A303 with packed lunches and their heads full of prime numbers, squares, but unfortunately not lines of reflection of a parallelogram.

Millfield were our generous (not just in terms of cakes) hosts and we were soon made to feel at home (mainly in terms of cakes) after a two-hour journey.  Ten teams were participating and only the winning team would go through to the National Semi Final.  Our so called A team of Harry, Jack, Yuyao and Thomas made some mistakes early on and were faltering.  Our so-called B team of Angus, Jimmy, Jackie and Arthur  were however, flying.

At the half way stage they were winning the whole keenly contested competition and were involved in a 3-way tussle. As the questions got more and more difficult, they just continued to get better. Both teams were clearly enjoying the quiz as the smiles, odd giggle and exclamations proved.  It was a great shame that just towards the end, the B team just lost out and came a highly commendable second place, beating many schools’ very best mathematicians.  Many congratulations must go to the winning team who now proceed to the national semi-finals that are held after half term. Hopefully, this time they will start a little bit better, as the winning team with a very high score was indeed our A team.  A very successful day all round! Well done to every single boy.
