Finalists at Mathematics Championships
The semi-finals of the Quiz Club National Mathematics Championships took place last week, and the competition was fierce.
After a long drive to Surbiton High School, our team had the challenging target of reaching 2100 points, although a score of 1900 would secure Elstree a place in the final.
With only one question to go, the Elstree team needed to gain the 100 points up for grabs, to increase their score from 1835 to 1935. Meanwhile, one of the other teams had taken the lead with 1930, and another was close behind.
Elstree were triumphant in achieving the 100, whereas the leaders didn’t know the answer, so had to split their guess to guarantee 25 points, giving them a total score of 1955 and a firm place in the final.
The other challenger team then scored 1940, meaning Elstree took a very impressive third place.
