Cross-Country Competition
October 20, 2023Elstree Strikes Gold Twice at The Manor, Abingdon Cross-Country competition!…
During the Summer term the boys and girls participate in athletics as part of their daily games sessions. In these sessions they are taught how to improve their technique in track and field events; examples include how to throw a javelin, the correct technique for high jump and how to hurdle correctly.
During the term the children aim to beat their personal bests (to run quicker, throw further or jump higher.) These personal bests will help to decide which events they are suited for at Sports Day, which is held towards the end of the Summer term and sees the four School Houses compete for the coveted House Athletics Cup.
As well as Sports Day, throughout the term there are opportunities for the children to participate at athletics meetings against other local prep schools. The focus for many children is the Mercia Area Championships, held normally in Abingdon which attracts a large number of schools. If pupils are fortunate to win or come second in their event, which many do, they are then selected to represent the Mercia Area at the National Prep School Championships held at Alexandra Palace in Birmingham.
