Mathematics

At Elstree we believe that the understanding and enjoyment of mathematics as central to its success for all pupils. Maths is a vital subject, and applied mathematics concerns itself with mathematical methods that are typically used in science, engineering, business, and industry. The department equips pupils with the mathematical skills which will be the foundation, not just for Common Entrance or Entrance Scholarship, but also for further study and employment in later life, be it in financial, scientific, business or technology environments.

Our Scheme of work is predominantly based on the National Curriculum and the ISEB Common Entrance syllabus. Pupils are streamed to get the best for everyone and be able to work at their own pace.

Elstree combines traditional mathematics teaching with the new ideas adapted from the National Numeracy Strategy. The school also produces its our own sets of mathematical games, as games can motivate students to improve skills that are usually learned by rote. Pupils are also challenged regularly with mental arithmetic tests.
