Elstree Sports Day 2019

We were blessed with the most perfect weather for Sports Day on Saturday with clear blue skies and just a hint of a breeze to keep everyone cool.  After so much rain, the Elstree grounds were looking absolutely magnificent; the groundsmen had done a fantastic job.

The morning saw the athletics events take place on Lower, with hurdles, high jump, long jump, javelin, shot put, tug of war, discus, relays, long distance and sprint races. Everyone gave their best, cheered on by a wonderfully supportive crowd.

The old  boys race was hotly contested this year, with the largest field for years.

Sascha DJ, mother of the Captain of Athletics, presented the athletics prizes, before everyone headed to the front lawn for picnics.  Many congratulations to South who were the overall winners.

After the excitement of Sports Day, Year 8 boys and their families enjoyed a special lunch in the dining room, and on the lawn outside.

Lunch was followed by many activities including the swimming finals – thank you to Hen H, mother of the captain of swimming, who kindly handed out the prizes – the fencing finals; judo demonstrations; DT displays; art exhibitions; cricket showcases; and a beautiful concert in the Long Room.  As the jazz band entertained everyone on the terrace, people then headed in to the marquee for prize giving.

Once speeches from the Chairman of Governors and Headmaster were finished,  Helen P mother of the Head Boy, handed out the prizes. Head Boy Alex, concluded the day with a speech including a tongue in cheek declaration to the Headmaster:  “I think I’ve done a bit more growing since Year 3 than you have, Sir!”

A delicious tea on the lawn ended a very happy and memorable Sports Day.  It was an afternoon to showcase the breadth of opportunities and talent at Elstree, at its very best.
