On Friday 24th January the pupils of Elstree had a celebration of words and poetry. The school welcomed Mr Chris Wheeler, Headmaster of Monkton Combe School to adjudicate the annual Declamations Final. Mr Wheeler also generously delivered a workshop on Chaucer to the Year 6 pupils. This hour long session introduced the boys to decoding middle English as well as deciphering some Chaucer in accessible and engaging ways.
In the afternoon, in a suitably formal affair, the school congregated in the McMullen Hall for the Declamations competition. All twenty-seven finalists performed with noted maturity and confidence. Many guests and staff commented on the unrivalled standard. It is obvious to say the competition was stiff but what was most noticeable was the range of poetry performed from Shelley to Dahl. I would echo Mr Wheeler’s parting words: “It was obvious the finalists were performing because of the pleasure they found in performance and the spoken word.” A great day, had by all.
