Brockweir Soapbox Derby
On Saturday, five brave Year 7 boys got up early to participate in the UK’s steepest soapbox race at Brockweir, near Chepstow. Having successfully designed and built their carts, one of the modified carts with the more secure roll-bars entered the race.
Angus led off the junior race setting the time to beat of 54.1 seconds. The Bamboo flyer (last year’s winner) went into a big lead with 45.7 seconds. Luca did a tremendous job narrowly beating that quick time to regain the lead at 44.2 seconds. However, Bamboo flyer shaved a further 2 seconds off our new record to win this year’s Junior Race and beat us into second place. A great result on the UK’s fastest course.
Other events during the day included meeting the TV crews of Blue Peter and Big Friday Wind-Up airing in January 2018. Ignacio, Manuel and Jack even managed to interview Lesley from Blue Peter.
A great team-effort which gave the boys lots of experience and ideas about how to modify and re-redesign key components to reach the top speeds of 48mph recorded this year on Mill Hill.
Thank You to Mr. Geddes and Mr. Bell for taking the boys and helping them with this fun project.
