Boarders’ Race Night in PJs

Elstree Boarders were treated to yet another entertaining and imaginative evening of fun at Race Night last Friday. In normal times, pupils would be joined by a family member and/or a non-boarding sibling, but unfortunately this year, that wasn’t meant to be.

Tension as the races begin

Immediately after supper, children raced upstairs to get changed in to their PJs (pyjamas) and excitedly made their way to the McMullen Hall.  Mr Attwood went through the runners and riders, and bets were then placed with the bookies – Mr. Williams (Hill) and Miss. G’luck(!).

Fortunes were won and lost, as the boarders ran the whole gamut of emotions from elation to despair and everything in between. Fortunately, bags of Walkers crisps and lashings of lemonade were on hand to console the losers and toast the winners.

One last chance of glory

The last race of the night saw the formation of several syndicates, who pooled their resources and risked it all for one last chance of glory. Most were left with the gloomy look of a wet Tuesday afternoon in Doncaster, but for some an enormous win capped  a fantastic night, and led them to wonder whether the R Whites bottles of lemonade could be sprayed like a jeroboam of the good stuff on the podium at Monaco

A special mention to Tom, Ferdy and Alex for wiping out the bookies with their £145,000 return!

Next term (fingers crossed): the Murder Mystery Night

The whole evening was terrific fun and our thanks go to Mr. Attwood for his organisation, and all the staff who helped contribute to making the night such a success. Fingers crossed we’ll be back to normal for our planned Murder Mystery evening next term.
