From the Problem of Plastic to the Magic of Maths

Whilst the senior boys were busy with a play rehearsal, the rest of the school had a series of lectures on Saturday.

The Year 5s were left dazzled by a magical maths performance from Mr Williams.  Their perspectives of impossibility and wonder were split into fractals.  Introductions were made to some of the witches and wizards from the mathematical world, Pythagoras, Mandelbrot, Kepler and his mother just to name a few.  They were amazed at the beauty of the Golden Ratio and astonished by the tricks of not-so-tricky maths!

The Year 6s discussed the issues surrounding this plastic, from its invention to possibly the future death of plastic due to its huge waste.  They looked at the ‘Pacific Garbage Patch’ which is six times bigger than the UK!  This was followed by a discussion on renewable energy and the future for our country, with Wind Energy being a popular solution.  Reduce, reuse, recycle was the clear message!
