U13 Singles Tennis Tournament

Bates hosted the inaugural Elstree Under 13 Singles Tennis Tournament on Sunday 24th April with four boys from Elstree, Cothill, Ludgrove and Summer Fields competing in a sixteen-man field for individual glory; there was also a team event, in which all boys’ final rankings counted. The Elstree team played superbly and got better and better throughout their four matches. Max Jardine-Brown won three out of his four matches; Barnie Thomson and Peter Compton-Burnett, a year and two years young respectively, won two out of four; and Hector Brown won one of his matches. All boys rallied well, were patient and competitive, and of course always displayed perfect sportsmanship. We came third overall.

The individual winner was Mark Spiridinov from Summer Fields who beat his chum Albert Sitwell, in a final containing well-drilled technique. The team winners,  however, were the boys from Ludgrove, who came third, fourth, fifth and seventh. I like the fact that the team with the two best players did not win the team event, which in many ways will probably be the competition’s strength in future years.

I was proud of the Elstree Four – well done, Max, Barnie, Peter and Hector. I was also so proud to host this event for the first time in such a magnificent and picturesque tennising arena. Bates always looks good but never better than in the Summer heat of prep school battle.

What a super way to spend a Sunday.
