Travels in India Lecture Year 6, 7 and 8 were given a talk on Friday 11th December by Allie Matchwick and Katherine Manchip, two students at Bristol University, about their travels in India last summer and the work they did at TRUST children home, near Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu. TRUST is a small non-governmental organization set up by a family originally to provide for children who lost their parents in the 2004 Tsunami. TRUST is now home to 47 children, encompassing a range of ages and backgrounds. The girls spent six weeks helping in the home, teaching English and setting up art and sport projects and also visited schools, a government hospital and a local vet. The aim of the talk was to show the differences in attitudes, culture and lifestyle of people in rural India and hopefully provide some ideas and inspiration for the boys with regard to travelling and gap years in a few years time. Samples of fruit and Indian Sweets were handed round and there were a surprising number of volunteers for a chilli-eating competition – though some may have regretted this enthusiasm later! |
