Year 4 Roald Dahl Museum Trip |
A wonderful whizz popping day!
On Thursday 18th July, Year 4 set off early in the morning with great excitement, to visit the Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre at Great Missenden, Buckinghamshire. We arrived in good time and, in small groups, went on a ‘Village Trail’. Passing through the ‘Wonka’ gates made especially by Warner Brothers, we walked to the library and thought about ‘Matilda’ spending … “glorious hours sitting quietly by herself in a cosy corner devouring one book after another.” From the library we were able to see the Post Office where hundreds of sacks of post would be received for Roald Dahl. We visited the railway station and then walked along the high street where we looked at the petrol pumps which inspired Roald Dahl’s description of the garage in his book ‘Danny the Champion of the World.’ Further along the high street we admired the timber framed building ‘Crown House’ which was the house opposite Sophie’s ‘norphanage’ in ‘The BFG.’ We shared an extract from the book imagining the Giant blowing dreams through the windows with his trumpet. We then walked up the hill to the graveyard of the church of St Peter and St Paul. Here, on the top of the hill, we followed the BFG footprints from the memorial bench to Roald Dahl’s grave. On our return to the museum, the boys spent some time in ‘Miss Honey’s Classroom.’ Afterwards we went to the Story Centre where the boys explored Roald Dahl’s replica writing hut and enjoyed the activities. Finally, we moved on to the biographical galleries which gave an interesting insight into Roald Dahl’s life. The galleries even had doorways that smelt of chocolate. On leaving the museum the boys received a notebook and ‘goodie bag’. We all agreed on the coach trip home that we had had a wonderful whizz popping day.
