| Torch Trust Lecture 21st May |

A wonderful insight into the world of the blind The boys of Years 4, 5, 6 and 7 were given a very special insight into the work of the Torch Trust, one of the charities we regularly support. The Torch Trust is a Christian charity celebrating their 50th anniversary this year, carrying out work both in the UK and abroad. We were joined by Marilyn Baker, a singer/songwriter and now a trustee of the work, who being blind from birth, was able to unpack some of the issues facing blind people, and what help is now available to give them as full and fulfilled a life as possible. Marilyn was supported by her faithful guide dog, Pennie, and by Hilary Haines who also shares in the Trust's work. The boys were intrigued and amazed by the various technological developments available, from a speaking colour recogniser to help those who are not able to see colour to select clothiong for themselves, to speaking clocks and braille 'computers', and they had the opportunity to learn braille for themselves. A competitiojn box is available in the front hall for their named entries. As ever, the warmth of welcome from the boys, and the range of their questions, showed just what a great impact Marilyn was able to have. And of course, whilst an unusual activity, the boys did enjoy a little singalong with one of her self-styled Country and Western tunes! |
