Sports

Sport is an integral part of school life at Elstree and plays a key role in supporting the ethos and qualities of the school. It teaches boys and girls how to win and lose graciously, to lead and to be led by others, to push themselves physically and mentally, to improve physical fitness and knowledge, to learn self-discipline, to think unselfishly as part of a team and to have fun!

Elstree offers a broad and extensive range of sports in the weekly games program and gives every child the opportunity to unlock and maximise their potential. It is fully inclusive and aims to challenge, develop and improve their knowledge and skills at the appropriate level. Our beautiful and expansive grounds provide the perfect setting for this lifelong sports education. We are very lucky to have a highly experienced and dedicated games coaching staff including four fully qualified PE teachers who coach both junior (Year 3 and 4) games and senior (Year 5-8) games every day.

Every child is timetabled at least five one hour sessions a week. Each term has a major team sport; these are football, rugby, hockey and cricket. Children also participate in athletics, badminton, basketball, cross-country, fencing, golf, gymnastics, health related fitness, horse riding, judo, kayaking, swimming, outdoor education, sailing, squash, shooting, table tennis, tennis and trampolining. In Years 3-6 the children are grouped in age groups for games. In Years 7 and 8, the children are grouped together and split into groups, dependent on their ability.

As a result of our emphasis on skill acquisition, we aim to provide fixtures against other schools for the pupils so that they can compete at the appropriate level. Whilst we attempt to give everyone the chance to represent the school in the major sport each term, there will be times where some pupils will have more fixtures than others. Over the course of a year, Elstree provides over 400 competitive opportunities for the pupils to represent the school in a number of sports. We endeavour to challenge the pupils to perform to the best of their ability and we are able to push some pupils towards representative honours. Added to this, we place a high importance on fully inclusive internal house sports competitions which are always brilliant fun!

Facilities include a well-equipped sports hall marked for badminton, five a side football, tennis, basketball and volleyball, and a competition trampoline. We are lucky to have a new full size all weather pitch which can host 11-a-side hockey and football, two mini 7-a-side hockey pitches and 9 tennis courts. We also have a smaller all weather pitch also marked for tennis, football and hockey. An outdoor heated swimming pool is used throughout the summer term. We also have excellent outdoor facilities including numerous pitches for the major sports, 6 outdoor cricket nets which have recently been refurbished, a portable cricket cage, an artificial cricket wicket, a 9 hole golf course and putting green, and a low ropes course.
