Breakfast Workshop for Year 1

Year 1 have been doing their topic on Farming  and were visited by Jan from The Newbury & District Agricultural Society, delivering a fun-filled morning with many different activities.

They started the morning by making yummy, fresh smoothies using apples, mangoes, bananas, cherries and oranges, which the children helped Jan to prepare.  They also made porridge, which they all thoroughly enjoyed while choosing either honey or brown sugar to sprinkle on top.  There was not a scrap left over!   Next, they played some farming games using all the energy from their breakfast while taking it in turns to deliver the other children their breakfast and carrying out a number of fitness exercises.  The children also had an egg and spoon race, which meant they had to be EGG-stremely careful not to drop the egg!

After their break, the children met Buttercup the cow.  Jan informed the children of many different facts about cows and the process behind milking them. Jan was very impressed with the children’s knowledge and one of the key facts the children learned was how milkmaids used to milk the cows twice a day.  This meant the children had the opportunity to milk Buttercup using the technique, which was great fun!

Finally, the morning was finished with planting different seeds of barley, wheat and oats, which are now growing in the classroom.
