The Kennet and Avon Canal, Woolhampton

On Tuesday 4th October we went to visit the Kennet and Avon Canal just down the road from school. We went on the mini bus and there was a great deal of excitement about our first trip together!

As we walked towards the canal we saw a canal boat heading for the lock. We rushed over to watch it enter the lock and the lock gates close. Then the vents on the lock gates were opened and we saw the water rush into the lock. It didn’t take long for the boat to rise up and soon the other gates were open and the boat was on its way. We walked along the canal and spotted a boat which was larger than the other ones. The couple on the boat were delighted to talk to the children about their boat. They told us all about the rooms on the boat and how far they had travelled. They even showed us some crayfish that they had caught in the canal. Their crayfish net is usually used at night but they put it in for us to see if we could catch one. No luck!

Then we walked on to find the moving footpath bridge and to our amazement a boat was coming though and had opened the bridge. We watched it glide through and then the man had to close the bridge.  We all stood on the bridge for a photo!

The weather was amazing and life on the canal was busy. We spotted trains, plane and cars as well as the boats, perfect for our topic on Transport and Travel.
